2023-2024 Emerging Artist Series

Gran pas de deux: Vladimir Tsypin, violin & Robert Phillips, guitar – November 13, 2023

Ben Lougheed
December 11, 2023

Gran pas de deux is a violin and guitar duo consisting of Russian violinist Vladimir Tsypin and American guitarist Robert Phillips. Together they will perform a concert of music from the Baroque era to modern times. The program will include works by Paganini, Massent and Piazzolla. Robert’s engaging commentary on the music makes for an informative and entertaining experience.

Soviet-born Vladimir Tsypin, was a top prize winner of the Tchaikovsky National Competition. In 1983 Maestro Zubin Mehta invited him to join the New York Philharmonic Orchestra where Mr. Tsypin held the title “Assistant Principal Second Violin” from 1986-2002. He has worked with such great conductors, as Bernstein, Maazel, Muti, among others. He performed with the New York Philharmonic in the best concert halls in the United States and around the world.

In 2018, Mr. Tsypin stepped down to pursue the career of violin soloist, and chamber musician. He has played in small ensembles and solo in Merkin Concert Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 1994 and 1995 Mr. Tsypin toured Japan as part of “The New York Trio Concertant.” Mr. Tsypin has given solo recitals in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Taiwan, and Japan. He has served as Judge at the Johannes Brahms International Competition in Pörtschach, Austria.

Mr. Tsypin’s recordings have appeared on Preiser Records, Centaur Musicarte XXI, and MSR Classics labels.

Robert Phillips’ eclectic programming has excited audiences on three continents. Since making his debut to a sold-out Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Robert has brought his brilliant interpretations to a diverse range of venues – from traditional concert halls including New York’s prestigious Town Hall, and Lincoln Center to jazz nightclubs. Robert has appeared as a guest artist at the Miami International Guitar Festival, the Guitar Foundation of America, and the American String Teachers’ Association, as well as numerous performing arts series.

Robert holds a doctorate in music from the University of Miami.  A recipient of a Japan Fulbright, Dr. Phillips is respected internationally as a scholar, and educator, as well as a performer.  A former student of Rey de la Torre, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, and David Starobin, he has embraced a wide range of repertory preferences. He most recently has commissioned and recorded a set of 6 dances for guitar by Jorge Morel, Troy Gifford, Rex Willis, Howard Buss, Charles Griffin, and Benoit Glazer. Robert can be heard on recordings released by TPL Records, Centaur Records, 4Tay Records and Navona Records.

Proposed Program: titled “Dancing on 6 Strings” featuring dances from around the world, including music by Chopin, Falla, Piazzolla, Sor, Rameau, and more.

Described as creating “music of dramatic power and lyric beauty,” Dr. Ben Lougheed knows how to draw in audiences and give them “another dimension in which to enjoy [his] performances.” A performer, entrepreneur, and pedagogue in his multifaceted career, Ben’s diverse professional experiences include over ten years of performances, community engagement, music entrepreneurship, and teaching. Audiences, colleagues, and critics have repeatedly referred to Ben as “an emerging force in the classical guitar world,” with “beautiful” and “extremely precise” playing.

A central thread to all of Ben’s work is his focus on education and outreach. His desire to engage audiences and communities through vivid and captivating musical performances is only strengthened by his love of connecting with his audience through informative exchanges. These lively audience-performer interactions serve to strengthen each person’s experience with the music and have been enthusiastically received by concertgoers around the country, including recent performances for the Treasure Coast Guitar Society, Kerrytown Concert House, and the Dale Mabry Guitar Series.

Ben is also a highly sought-after and accomplished teacher who has built one of the largest Suzuki guitar studios in the Southeastern United States. As the only guitarist in the world with a doctorate and all nine Suzuki book certifications, Ben is in demand as a guest instructor at events across the country. His students have been selected for the All-State and All-National ensembles and won prizes at multiple guitar competitions.

Ben’s creative fingerprints can be seen all around his community via his numerous projects and collaborations. As the founder and director of the Florida Guitar Festival, Ben has raised over $65,000 to bring together hundreds of burgeoning musicians and students for educational activities, concerts, and competitions. Additionally, Ben’s work with the festival included a collaboration with GRAMMY-winner Bill Kanengiser on the first recorded performance of Sergio Assad’s piece, “The Walls.” Furthermore, Ben’s community engagement includes being a Founder and Director of the Tallahassee Chapter of Classical Revolution, a classical music outreach organization that produced dozens of classical music concerts in non- traditional venues.

Ben’s debut album, Baroque Legacies, showcases music by influential and celebrated Baroque composers parallel with contemporary pieces inspired by these historic paragons of the music world. Described as “emotionally delicious from start to finish” and “technically perfect,” this recording provides a glimpse into how lyrical beauty is pervasive through time.
